The Greatest Coal Miner that ever Lived

Coal mining is more to some people than just a job or a way to make good money. I for one do like my job as a underground roof bolter. While others do it just for the money you can make. Although it is not what it used to be.

My grandfather was a coal miner for his whole life.It is the only job he ever new.Starting out as a rock picker and eventually ending up as a electrician. For over 40 years day in and day out.My grand dad loved his job and he did it well. When I was little I can remember looking out the window when I would stay during summer vacation and watching him leave for work in a old light blue Volkswagen super beetle. Then in the evening he would come home covered in coal dust and I thought that was the coolest thing in the world. Instead of being tired and grouchy he was always in a good mood.I never once saw my grand dad mad his entire life. When he would enter the room he always said"Hello Walls"it's from an old song in his time.He was a good man, friend to everyone and I loved him every much.A Coal miner at heart.
He passed away today and my world above ground is as dark as the section I just left. The world has lost a great man and doesn't even know it.

He was in my mind the Greatest coal Miner that ever was.

I'll miss you Gramps.

  1. I wrote this post the day my grand pa passed away and I have not been back since. It still brings a tear to my heart when I read this.I am not working underground anymore, I was laid off. Seeing the future of coal mining getting worse everyday and the memory of my grand dad makes me wonder if I will go back underground again....Be safe
